Career Exploration Program Successfully Launched

The CL Chamber of Commerce Foundation along with CL South High School and the City of Crystal Lake implemented a new method for high school students to make choosing their livelihood and passion easier.  Career Exploration is a program where CLSHS Junior and Seniors may apply to job shadow a select position at the City of Crystal Lake for three, two hour or longer intervals to see if what they think they will love is truly a good fit for them.

Each CLSHS student is given an overview of day to day activities at a potential career choice in the City of Crystal Lake’s departments of Police, Fire Rescue, Community Development, Public Works, and Administration.  The Career Exploration Program allows prospective departments to also get a first glance at potential interns and future employees. The students who participated this past month are Skylar Schoedel and Victoria Falbo and Joey Puccini.

Joey Puccini was the first student in and he observed the Fire Rescue Department during training evolutions and the various divisions of Administration, Training, Fire Prevention and Operations.  Skylar Schoedel and Victoria Falbo met with City Manager Gary Mayerhofer and Deputy City Manager Eric Helm. Human Resources Director.  Ann Everhart also met with them to share a little background regarding HR and then sat with them through the City Council meeting where the City budget was approved.  “Both girls would like to come back to spend some time in the Finance Department to get a better sense of what they do in public finance”, said Everhart.  “I think the girls thought the evening was informative and they appreciated the opportunity”.

This program was made possible with the help of Victoria Summers, Crystal Lake Chamber Foundation Vice Chair; Michelle Kidd, Industry and Careers at Crystal Lake South; and Ann Everhart, Human Resources Director for the City of Crystal Lake.  They will be continuing and expanding the Career Exploration Program and capturing more students in the future.  They wish to help define and streamline student’s educational exploration of options to reduce the chance ofnot being happy with their career selection.
